What Members Thought

I tackled this autobiographical novel over the weekend for the "Classics Corner" discussion at Constant Reader and found it a very engrossing read. Knowing the outcome of the larger story beyond the bounds of the book itself made the reading especially powerful and compulsive.

It was all too easy to relate to the main character - a girl suffering from a warped perception of her capabilities and the expectations of those she loves. Sylvia Plath writes beautifully.
One image in particular stays with me: at one point the main character analogizes her life to the fruit of a fig tree. While she sits and tries to decide which fruit to grab (i.e. which life path to choose), they wither and die before her eyes.

It gives such an authentic, personal view of a girl's mental illness, that you see things her way, and by the end you're relating to her irrational thoughts. One of my favorites.

At 17, I thought this was a great book. Rereading it at 40, I wouldn't give it a 5 star rating, more like 3.5-4.
