What Members Thought
I loved this book. I disagree with those who think this is the female version of "Catcher in the Rye." The writing in "Bell Jar" is far superior to that in "Catcher", and the events, except for one, are believable and told from a more realistic standpoint than those in "Catcher". I've read some comment that this book is "dated". Well, it's no more dated than any other work including topical references. Interesting that no one calls, oh, say, "Jane Eyre" dated. i just read the new bio of flannery oconnor and there is a sad contrast between these two stories. flannery was a young writer fighting to stay alive and writing on her deathbed and sylvia ended her own life and ended her writing career . sad..
I read this in high school, now I've read it again with more connection. Having lived life a little, I have an ability to relate to the main character's breakdown. Not an uplifting book, overall.
