What Members Thought

Fortunately, I had never felt hunger the way Hamsun described in Hunger. Because the story is loosely based on Hamsun's own life, he described the experience so well. I could feel the suffering along with the narrator, whoever he was. How he had to suck his finger to alleviate some hunger pang, etc, was just mind-blowing to me. But I didn't understand why he was so proud that he couldn't consider helps from others. Was that a part of being an "artist"?
