The Overstory barely got five stars. If it wasn't for the fact that I gave the alarming and beautiful prose, the depth of emotion, and keen human observations found in the story six stars, and then took away a half star for the sin of info-dumping, The Overstory would have missed.

Info dumping is an egregious error in a story that, not once, but twice, states that "The best arguments in the world won't change a person's mind. The only thing that can do that is a good story."...and then goes on to

I make it a point to try to be positive in my reviews (actually in everything I do), but "The Overstory" took me by surprise. Often paralyzed by the deluge of excellent works of fine literature to the point where it takes me many days to decide what to read next...how does such a mediocre work end up winning a Pulitzer...? There is so, so much to choose from... That said, I would probably not have been as disappointed if my experience with the book was not juxtaposed with the Pulitzer, being sho ...more

Interesting, at times captivating, narratives and characters. An odd read during the pandemic and an interesting one during police violence against people protesting against police violence. Our times are so damn depressing.
