I absolutely love Elizabeth Strout's writing. This collection of linked stories gathers the people from Lucy Barton's town of Amgosh in Illinois, the one's Lucy and her mother talked about as Lucy lay in her hospital bed recovering from a mysterious illness. What Strout does so beautifully in this book and in several others, is capture the ways in which class affects both children and adults. Beautifully observed and written, a volume of linked stories mostly about small-town, middle-aged characters that somehow survived their childhoods. Very dark. Really has churned me up, and I'm not sure how it's all going to shake out for me.

ETA: A month later, I'm bumping it up to five stars, because the book has stayed with me as the apex of fiction writing. Really well done.
