The story pivots on survival of a survivor. The persistency of life to endure despite hazards, troubles, and perils. It quietly contested the notions of human as a social animal, and a member of a society. The author chose to show issues that can be fleshed out in further discussions rather than explaining everything, unless it was very necessary to make readers understand.

More like 4.5, I think. Had a hard time with the first few pages, but got sucked in after that.
It’s an excellent introduction to the North Carolina marshlands. Having it be a kind of layered mystery (why did mother leave, who killed Shane, who was the poet) was a bonus. I also really liked the way the past and present slowly met up and merged.
