You don't have to love a book to respect it. As a reading experience, I didn't particularly love this book, but damn, Ward can write! That is, she is that most unusual of novelists who writes like a hybrid poet-novelist. Most novelists burn through words like they are expendable kudzu.

The book is one of those point-of-view jumpers, chapter by chapter, focused on a mixed-race family in Mississippi. Thus we get Leonie, daughter of Riv and Mam, plus her son JoJo and her daughter Kayla. Sing, Unbur
