4.5 rounded up because I think it is an "important" book. Important to realize that slavery and colonization didn't just affect the United States, nor is slavery just a white man's crime, and that there are no easy answers for the lingering effects of war, slavery, poverty, drug use, and discrimination. I was in the middle of report writing when I read this book, 4 years ago. I didn't write a review, although, looking back, I thought I had. I found the book interesting, but the characters seemed like illustrations of a character in a specific situation...those who are sent from Ghana to America and those who stay in Ghana. I never felt they were real people I was reading about. Octavia Butler's characters feel far more "realized" than Gyasi. Maybe I need to try again. The distractions at the en ...more
