I remember being absolutely bowled over by this book, read it one summer between college semesters and think of it as the first novel read for pleasure, not as a requirement for school. Reading fiction has never been the same .

Colombia - It took me forever to read this - nearly a year, IIRC. I was uncomfortably lost in it for a while, but eventually found that it had a lot in common with several German novels (Novalis' Heinrich von Ofterdingen and Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, for instance) and got a better feel for what García Marquez was trying to do. I really need to go back to read it again and think about it properly. ...more
