What Members Thought
God, how enthralling the first 50 pages sounded! Then I simply got lost in the endless succession of Aurelianos and Jose Arcadios and Remedioses (?). If only it spread over 3 generations and spared me the details of ants invading the decaying houses on and off and filth permeating souls and levitating fig-like old women and clairvoyant hirsute loners...
Colombia - It took me forever to read this - nearly a year, IIRC. I was uncomfortably lost in it for a while, but eventually found that it had a lot in common with several German novels (Novalis' Heinrich von Ofterdingen and Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, for instance) and got a better feel for what García Marquez was trying to do. I really need to go back to read it again and think about it properly.

I actually didn't finish this book, that almost never happens. I can't figure out why this is on all of lists of "must read" books. I'm sure someone will tell me I'm missing something but I'm not wasting my time with it anymore.
