David Mitchell is a wonderful writer and one of the few whose every book I would look forward to reading. This is no exception - One of the best coming-of-age stories I've read.
It takes place during one year in the young life of Jason Taylor, a young boy with a speech impediment which leads to merciless bullying. Jason desperately wants to belong but it seems to be a hopeless goal. He has an inner world to which he can retreat which is full of wonder and imagination but this is no fantasy - Jaso

Very different from Mitchell's other work, but excellent in its own right - a perfect time capsule of a book in how it preserves the early 1980s and the drama of being 13. Mitchell spices it all with a wry-but-gentle humor that leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy but not saccharine. ...more
