This little book surprised me in the most wonderful way. Steinbeck has the same worldly, sad view of America that I saw in Grapes of Wrath, but here it's merged with sweet tales and funny characters who not only survive but fully embrace a life of poverty and freedom. This book is a series of related short stories steeped in magical realism. It's a precursor to Bradbury's Dandelion Wine and also feels like a more adult companion to The Wind in the Willows.
