Shelves: novel

Before last year, I had not heard of Ron Rash, but he is now one of my favorites. This is a book that will stay with me - compelling, terrifying, haunting. Leaves one contemplating the nature of evil.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I just love, love, love this book! It definitely yanked me out from the literacy rut that I've been in. Ron Rash got my attention by the second page, and I wanted to call in sick from work so that I could finish reading! I thought that Rash weaved the story and built his characters very well. I could only "sense" what about to come, but I couldn't guess which direction would the story take me exactly. It was tense, dramatic, and tragic.

This one was a tough to rate. I guess it's really a 3.5. The story and writing are good--the writing is very good. But this book was entirely too violent for me (people-people, people-animal, animal-animal). It could have been a solid 4.

This was another just "OK" read for me. I found the story to be interesting, in fact while reading it I felt it had a bit of a "There Will Be Blood" (movie) feel to it, but the two main characters were just so unlikeable that it really turned me off. I found most of the characters to be very one dimensional, with really only one that seemed to be fully developed and it was her character that kept me interested enough to finish the book. Mixed feelings. On the one hand, a beautifully written novel that I could not stop reading. On the other, I'm left with an "eh" feeling at the end, probably because I thought the ending was a bit of a cop-out and the coda was rather cliche. So, the story itself was a bit weak for me.
