I hated this. Gave up pretty early in. Granted, I tend not to like fabley, fantasyish stuff. But sometimes, if a book's really good, I'll succumb.
I really loved most of KI's earlier work. He began to lose me at Never Let Me Go. It's his job to win me back, but he won't with this one.

The Buried Giant has all the hallmarks of classic Ishiguro. It’s understated to the extreme. So much happens in subtext that it’s as if inference were the main plot, drawing meaning through layers of allegory. At the surface, surprisingly little happens, though the novel always seems on the brink of revelation and transition. This is the fourth novel that I have read by Ishiguro and it has elements of fantasy and allegory but what he is driving at is beyond me. It has mythical figures: ogres and pixies, even a dragon and a quest, but by the end I was somewhat baffled as to the point of it all. It was well written and carefully paced, but the characters never really come to life and I found that I didn't care whether they fulfilled their destiny. Nonetheless I did finish it and wonder what is next for this inscrutable
