I started out reading this along with a huge group at http://www.bolanobolano.com/, but once I got past the part about the crimes didn't want to wait to read it at their pace, so I finished a little bit early.
I read the version published in 3 separate volumes, the first being about the Archimboldi scholars, the second about the crimes, and the third about Archimboldi himself. The second is hard to read but easier once you start connecting it to the other volumes. There is some great stuff here ...more

Still not sure whether 'Book' 4 is a necessary part of the whole but the whole is a good, well-written read with the last 'book' an effective conclusion.

Rarely am I as conflicted about books as I was about 2666. I suppose that is a good thing. There are four sections to this book, and they are all connected by the barest of threads. There is no conclusion to the novel, and story lines remain unresolved, almost forgotten.
But there is something here worth reading. It is on my shelf to read again soon.
