What Members Thought

I feel, that at the age of 30, I am finally starting to accumulate Things That I Have Learned. One is that I need to write any long piece of written work into a text document that I save frequently, such as Goodreads reviews. Particularly when your Mac is being a cock and overheating and shutting down for no good reason. Like, I actually just did that right then. I didn't wait until I lost an entire review - I just did it! I've been doing this for a year now! I feel like a fucking adult who has

This book is probably slightly better than a 3.5 but not quite as good as a 4. There was a lot here that I liked, and then some that didn't work so well for me.
I'll start with what I liked. Mostly I liked the characters and their stories. That's not to say I always approved their behaviors or thought they were great people (with two exceptions, all the characters pissed me off at some point), but they were all fairly compelling and realistic, and so were most of the situations they found themsel ...more

Author writes a novel featuring herself as a character (and her husband, both homes, etc etc). Author as character is writing a memoir. Is the novel the memoir? Author as character is also researching another story, that she found in a bag on the beach near her fictional and author's real home.

I really liked this novel, and especially the audiobook narrated by the author, Ruth Ozeki. This story moves back and forth in time between the present day and the past as told by a 16 year old in her diary. The theme of time is a constant thread through the novel (at times a bit too obviously), but the narrative is engrossing, and at times, disturbing. This is the type of book that makes you want to dissect it with a group and discuss all the various threads that weave in and out of the story.

Great writing and an interesting story, I wish the ending had been slightly less pat, but over all a great read. I really liked the magical realism qualities of the story and the way it shifted narrators to move from one perspective to another. Some of the scenes were hard to read, especially the scenes of bullying. It was necessary to the story to understand how hard things were, though.

I had another case of “too high expectation kills the book” which is not the book’s fault per se. It started well enough, but the mystical/Buddhist/quantum physics ending just did not work that well for me. It felt artificial. It is too bad, as actually my bookclub is just restarting after a couple of years hiatus, and I chose this book for our first discussion. I should know better than choosing a book I have not read…

Loved is an understatement. This book is so smart and brave and honest. It reminded me of "Elegance of the Hedgehog" meets "Sophie's World" meets "Spirited Away"... basically, perfect for me.
