I've just reread this book after many years absence, and I am blown away again by Greene's prescient book and wry observations. Fowler is a much more ambivalent character to me now, as are Pyle, Phuong and other characters. Each has their motives and no one has clean hands in this affair. Nor does anyone remain neutral in this war and Fowler, allegedly the neutral observer, does come to take this war very personally. A very well crafted story of a love triangle in the heart of Southeast Asia during the beginning of the American involvement in Vietnam. Very well done.
