I've just reread this book after many years absence, and I am blown away again by Greene's prescient book and wry observations. Fowler is a much more ambivalent character to me now, as are Pyle, Phuong and other characters. Each has their motives and no one has clean hands in this affair. Nor does anyone remain neutral in this war and Fowler, allegedly the neutral observer, does come to take this war very personally. The musicality of the French language set against the lush tropical background
