On the surface this is the story of Shadow, a man who is brought into the war between Gods. The Gods are brought to America from people who came or were brought here from various places. Over time these Gods are sometimes cast off and they fight for the right to remain in the hearts and minds of man. American Gods was imaginative, unique, thoughtful and thought provoking. After I finished reading I researched the book and the gods that it contained because i was so enamored by it.
I then presented it to my book group and although I knew most of them read little science fiction or fantasy I thought it was solid enough for anyone to read. I was very surprised that several of them either did not not like it or felt very lost in it.
