I loved Gaiman's Neverwhere, but I did it as an audiobook, with his wonderful reading. I'm thinking that was an aberration for me. Not sure I'd like this one even with Gaiman reading it. Gaiman writes well, but while I was reading this, I kept thinking it was a waste of his talent. I got about 2/3 of the way through before throwing in the towel. ...more

American Gods was imaginative, unique, thoughtful and thought provoking. After I finished reading I researched the book and the gods that it contained because i was so enamored by it.
I then presented it to my book group and although I knew most of them read little science fiction or fantasy I thought it was solid enough for anyone to read. I was very surprised that several of them either did not not like it or felt very lost in it.
