This is an excellent audiobook production of both Oscar Wao and the collection of short stories entitled Drown. The narrators, Jonathan Davis and Staci Snell, do an outstanding job. I especially appreciated the accents and the pronunciation of the Spanish words. I've been an admirer of Díaz' short stories for a while. But, I realized, listening to both of these, that the triumph in Oscar Wao is that the personalities are a little bit outside the neighborhood ones, the kids who don't fit. It seem ...more

Ayo akuilah. Tidak perlu malu. Bukan anda saja yang tidak secara spesifik mengetahui dimana letak Republik Dominika. Saya perlu men-google internet untuk mengetahui letak geografis negara kepulauan kecil Karibia tersebut. Alasannya: karena saya tertawan oleh sejarah dan kisahnya, seperti yang dituturkan secara memikat oleh Junot Diaz. Buku keduanya, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, secara gemilang meraih peringkat bestseller di seluruh dunia dan bahkan meraup pula Pulitzer Prize 2008 lalu.

I loved reading this book - the time sequence of the telling and how Díaz weaves in the Dominican Republic.

This provided the basis for a great discussion for my book club. A cheap way to sum it up would be to say that is about a first generation American's search to get laid before he dies. But that would overlook that this is really a treat to read. There are so many wonderful lines in this novel, a rich mixture of Spanish, English, Spanglish and sci-fi references that create a fascinating atmosphere while also raising worthwhile questions about the immigrant experience, the history of the Dominican ...more
