Lover Eternal brings us the story of Rhage, the most dangerous of the brothers. He has celebrity-esque good looks and is 6'8" tall with shoulders almost as wide as the doorframe (not my words!) He's unforgiving as a fighter, and unsatiable as a lover. And when something triggers him, he turns into a beast - uncontrollable and deadly. Like Wrath, he initially came off as a cold, ruthless Alpha but things change a great deal once he met his match, Mary Luce. Mary is a human and one completely far Lover Eternal brings us the story of Rhage, the most dangerous of the brothers. She considers herself plain and unnoticeable so when Rhage took an interest in her, it was hard for her to believe his sincerity. The two go through a lot of struggles before they finally accepted and believed the feelings of the other.

I thought Rhage and Mary were interesting characters. However, I would've liked for Mary's story about her illness to have developed further and see what Rhage felt for a longer period of time. Rhage on the other hand, intrigued me with his other form. I thought I was gonna get another Jericho Barrons (as if there could be another JZB) but it turns out that he felt that it was more of a liability than an asset, and rightly so, because up until Mary came to the picture there was no way of controlling the beast. And while I loved the sexy scenes I felt that the love was too instant. I wanted there to be more sexual tension leading up to their eventual union. I don't know... It works for some authors, like Kristen Ashley, but here I wasn't convinced, especially on Mary's end. I still liked them though, but there were times when I was frustrated with their insecurities and Rhage's clinginess.

What I did love about this book were the sub-stories, except for when it was the lessers' POV. I feel like skipping their parts every time it came to them. I was disappointed not to have much Wrath in the book, compared to the other brothers, and NO Marissa at all! But my absolute favourite in this book was John Matthew! I am so touched with his story. There's so much good in him and it'll be interesting to see what he would be like once he goes through the transition. Of course, I can't not mention Zsadist and Bella. What an interesting pair they make! My heart bleeds for Z! He is such a tortured soul! I can't wait to see where their story goes and how Bella will "save" him from his inner demons.

Overall I found this installment to be an enjoyable read, albeit not as much as the first one. I guess when I jumped into this series I was expecting a more intense read and that it would be mysterious and unputdownable. It actually feels "light" for me despite its heavy subjects. There were heartbreaking moments, but there were also a lot of funny scenes. I can't get over the humanity of the brothers - the loud rap songs, their flashy cars and leathers and most of all, their capacity to love. It's such a fun read and I'm looking forward to reading more. ...more

It's been quite a while since I read book 1, it was sometime in 2012 I think. I wasn't writing reviews then so I can't honestly remember why I only read book 1 and didn't keep going. If I hadn't committed myself to a couple of read to review books this week I can really see myself devouring this series. It's completely addictive!

What's not to love?! Alpha males, tough leather wearing vampires to be precise. If I hadn't committed myself to a couple of read to review books this week I can really see myself devouring this series. It's completely addictive!

What's not to love?! Alpha males, tough leather wearing vampires to be precise. A lot of action and politics, romance and tension, family dynamics, and a horrible deity type figure that has the power to weild ultimate control. Oh yeah I hate her. It feels too easy a get out clause for whatever unresolvable difficulty develops in the plot. It's there in the back of your mind, 'oh the Scribe Virgin will sort it out in some twisted way'. Nevermind though, the world would have lost something if there was no tradition or culture underpinning it.

It was the one thing I didn't like about this book though. It ended so abruptly. I was all ready to experience the heart shattering pain of the illness. I had faith all along there'd be a HEA but I really expected things to get a lot worse before they got better.

Minor point really though. Otherwise I loved this book and the world that's been created. I was concerned that the big gap I'd left since book 1 would mean I wouldn't remember all the details about the world. It came back to me very quickly though. The world is built in a natural and sublte way that makes it feel normal, like the world really is that way. It gels, it doesn't seem at all absurd, it just is what it is unapologetically so I as a reader just accept it and let the characters, relationships and action develop without pesky scepticism getting in the way. No information dumping.

I love the brothers characters, I love that I'm getting to know them each slowly. There are little peices pulling together all the time. Little peices that build the relationships, that tease out their histories, that give hints as to what may be in store for them. In this case I was already getting excited about what was obviously going to be the focus of book 3. The characters flaws are what make them unique and interesting. There's depth and tensions and growth.

This was Rhage and Mary's story and it was a beautiful one. Mary was such a sweet unassuming character but with a strong will and desire to care for others. It was clear how it would play out with his alter ego, to me at least, but I never the less enjoyed watching it play out. Watching the coming together of the two sides of Rhage's character, his acceptance of the beast and being at peace with himself.
Mary's growth was also emotional to watch. The pain of her loss was so fresh but she clearly needed to love, it was so obviously fundamental to who she was, to see her allow that to happen and allow it to be reciprocated was both beautiful and heart breaking.

I have to admire the author here in how she weaves in the meta plot of the battle with the lessors and the evolution of the vampire culture alongside what's fundamentally a romance novel. I'm literally itching to keep reading the series. The story of John and his transistion is going to be fascinating. The story of Zsadist and Bella is going to be intense. I'm nervy about what horrors O is going to inflict (although I'm afraid to admit I skim read the lesser parts). I wanted so much more out of this book but really I think it's that I want to be completely emersed in the world. It's great that it was focused on one couple but I did miss Beth and Wrath and I am desparate to learn more about each of them.

Fantastic series, lots of depth and interweaving threads, multifaceted flawed characters, intense romance and a network of relationships creating a world I'm coming to love and feel part of. ...more

Just finished and loved it. I loved Rhage and Mary's story. However, I felt like the ending was too (view spoiler)

Cannot wait to read about Zsadist!!! I am addicted to this series!!! Can not get enough of these vampires right now!

Oh, Rhage...

Yet another well executed, beautiful tale of star-crossed lovers coming together and shining brilliantly.

I def had more of a jonesin' for Rhage than Wrath and found his abrupt need and surprise for Mary to be cinnamon roll sweet.

And after reading the last chapter, I now have a new appreciation of my name. After countless years of idiots repeating the same 'Mary had a little lamb' recitations and fathered questions of just how snow white its fleece was, I began to detest my name at w ...more

This book I think is my favorite. (Writing review after I've read all the rest) I love Rhage and I love how funny he can be. This book made me laugh and cry and I really felt for Rhage. I am officially hooked on anything by J.R. Ward and I can't wait for more.

PS I need more Rhage. I feel like we haven't seen enough funniness from him since his book. I loved him on the boards in the Insiders Guide. ...more
