It was a 4.5 for me. The writing was smooth and the story sucked me in like a 5 star. I loved the characters and the "grey" areas. But i felt like the ending was too abrupt. I knew going in it was a novella but maybe i liked it too much because the ending seemed too premature. This was such a fast paced, engaging read! I loved every second of it, and when I was done all I could think was: MOAR!!!! Plzzz?

Some people could easily disregard this book as a fun, fluff type read. I think that would be a mistake. I feel that this book held deeper meanings asking to be considered and explored. In saying this, is this the deepest book I've ever read? No. Is it close? Not really. But this book did ask more of me t 4.5 For now this will be four stars, but I may be changing that.

Some people could easily disregard this book as a fun, fluff type read. I think that would be a mistake. I feel that this book held deeper meanings asking to be considered and explored. In saying this, is this the deepest book I've ever read? No. Is it close? Not really. But this book did ask more of me than I was expecting. It asked me to reconsider what is right and wrong, to question black and white, to accept something different: grey. I asked myself how something could be right and wrong at the same time. I was forced to reconsider things I've always taken verbatim: Eve was bad for what she did, and because it was bad, she felt guilty for it. This book put an interesting spin on many things I had considered a closed book and begged me to see the grey.

Probably my favorite part of this book was how Lucifer was characterized. He was such a complex character. At times I
felt like he was just a straight up asshole. At other times, I felt like he was a sensitive soul. Above all of this though, was the fact that Lucifer wanted the most out of life; he was not content to sit back and do exactly what those before him had done, just because they had been told it was right. No, Lucifer was willing to make the desperately hard decision. He was willing to forgo what was 'right' for something that was infinitely more real. I had to respect Lucifer as a character for his ability to make that choice. Because of this, Lucifer's character strikes me as very intelligent. He is able to see the things that others can't, and realizes that there isn't always a black and white way. Rather, he is able to see a grey way that can be exceptionally more real and beautiful.

Lucifer is a very misunderstood character. It sounds so DAMN cliche to say that, but it's the truth. No one character questions his actions or tries to find the deeper meaning behind his actions. Instead, he is instantly shunned, and written off. He is marked as evil, and sent to live in his own personal Hell. No one, until Serah, is willing to see anything beneath the Satan he was branded. This being said, Lucifer is not good. He is not a pure character whose terrible actions can be excused. Lucifer is bad and good at the same time, he is the grey area.

'No, she looked past it! He spat. She found something in me, something no one else could see. She cared when no one else gave a damn. She tried when everyone else said it was pointless.'

This book was a tangled web of real, unreal, black, white, and grey. I can't wait to see where the author takes this story!

Shelves: strong-female-character, dystopian

I am really sure how I want to rate this. I liked the book but wasn't completely thrilled about the ending. I thought that the sacrifice Satan made, once at the gate and once in the middle of the street, we're endearing. I had mixed feeling about Michael. He made up for a little bit in the street. I guess I have to give it 3.5 stars. If I liked the ending better it would have gotten a solid 4 stars. ...more

Shelves: favorites, all-time-favorites, not-your-typical-paranormal, is-it-hot-in-here-or-is-it-just-a-h, found-myself-with-a-tear-in-my-eye, would-read-again, emotionally-drained, kindle, did-not-see-that-coming

Fabulous, wow, what a book. Loved the entire story and characters. Especially loved Lucifer's smart ass comments, they were cleverly written.
I am very sad at the way it had to end, although I did not expect that particular ending. It did leave me with some unanswered questions but that in this book is a good thing. I knew going in the ending would have to not necessarily be a happy one due to the subject content.
