Ok, ok, ok… now where do I begin… I LOVED this story. And I have to be honest, I had read the book summary several months back and it didn’t excite me. But after reading all of the fantastic reviews coming from my friends, and reading another LH Cosway book, I was ready to take the plunge. And OMG… I was completely entranced by Nicholas as his tortured soul!!!

What a beautiful story!

This is the story of Freida (Fred) who is a Irish lass that is one of the funniest characters I have read! She is a brash, outspoken, and loveable! Here is my Fred:

The author skillfully portrayed two unforgettable and endearing lead characters and told a fresh, surprising love story. The first person narrative voice was a highlight. I am so happy to have read this wonderful story.

I absolutely LOVED Painted Faces!! I don’t know why I waited so long to read this book. The story is not the conventional tale of love, but it works so well. The book follows Freda and Nicholas in their journey towards falling in love. Fred is an out spoken, curvy girl who hides her insecurities and shyness behind her witty ways; she has yet to find love. I first read this book a year ago, and shamefully I am just now writing a review after I did a reread.

Painted Faces was an unconventional love story and it captivated me from start to finish.

We are introduced to Nicholas in the prologue as a young teenager. It is explained right away why he likes to dress as a woman and I understood him from the beginning. It was such a smart way for the author to introduce us to him.

Painted Faces was an unconventional love story and it captivated me from start to finish.

We are introduced to Nicholas in the prologue as a young teenager. It is explained right away why he likes to dress as a woman and I understood him from the beginning. It was such a smart way for the author to introduce us to him.

The story is told from Freda’s perspective. Freda likes to go by Fred and she is an outspoken, witty, Irish girl who is a tad insecure. She is a bit curvier, an American size 10 (if you ask me that isn’t fat, but we live in a cruel, cruel world), and she uses her humor as a defense mechanism since people sometimes tease her about her weight.

Fred first meets Nicholas as she is coming home. He is her new next door neighbor. Nicholas is gorgeous! He has a perfect body and an even more perfect face. At first Fred wonders if Nicholas is gay bc he dresses so well and has a certain feminine aspect to his demeanor, but then he clearly checks her out, so she quickly dismisses it.

Later on, Nicholas invites Fred and her roommate Nora to his cabaret show where they find out he is in fact a drag queen. On stage Nicholas is known as Vivica Blue. It becomes quite clear that Nicholas wants to sleep with Fred, but she knows it would just be about sex for Nicholas so she tells him she would like to just be friends.

Nicholas and Fred do become friends, they become best friends and Nicholas even asks Fred to be his assistant. She accepts and ends up loving the job. Fred loves watching Nicholas perform and they spend a lot of time together and grow extremely close. Eventually after spending so much time together, the attraction becomes too much and they give into their feelings.

Nicholas has a lot of issues stemming from his childhood, and dressing like a woman is one of those issues, but the other part is his inability to accept love. This of course causes trouble for Nicholas and Fred.

Painted Faces is a beautiful story about how we are viewed by the world one way, but it may not be who we really are. In fact, it usually isn’t.

I loved everything about this book. It was funny, smart, emotional, and had a really good message. I never thought I could crush on a drag queen, but Nicholas is definitely swoon worthy. And I have a HUGE girl crush on Fred. I seriously wish she was real so we could be best friends.
