I must admit, I was apprehensive about reading this book. I love Abbi Glines writing style and adored her Sea Breeze and Vincent Boys series, but I couldn’t imagine her writing young adult paranormal. How wrong I was. I found myself wondering why I left this on my tbr list for so long!

I loved the characters in this book. Abbi Glines always has me hooked on her characters! Pagan was really sweet and she genuinely cared about the feelings of others. She selflessly finished Lief’s homework for him ...more

I was all ready to say 3.5 stars until the end which completely shocked me. I just did not see that coming. I thought it would all be resolved in a happy ever after but this set it up so nicely for a book 2. I'm pleased, I'd like more, there is another book right? I haven't checked yet!

I really did enjoy this book. It reads so easily and Abbi managed to paint realistic characters very concisely. Sometimes supporting characters can be one dimensional and uninteresting, but I didn't find 4.5 stars

Pagan is intersting. She's a bit too 'goody two shoes' at times but not entirely selfless so she's not unrealistic. I'm not entirely convinced I see what's so special about her but her voice is age appropriate and the first person narrative is consistent. It feels as if we are following her thoughts, she doesn't know too much or think too much when clearly there isn't enough time for that in between the other characters reactions.

Leif is boring, as I often find these 'too good to be true but I'm not in love with you' boyfriends are. Pagan is not boring, he has soul(!) and spice and insight. I think his character needed more time to shine though.

The paranormal elements aren't overdone or complex either, so they complemented the story without there being too much to learn. (I find some paranormal worlds are so complex it takes too much of a book to understand who is what and what that means). Abbi introduces who/what people are etc gradually without leaving the reader getting annoyed at the unanswered questions along the way (I do think Pagan was a bit slow on the uptake though which was frustrating). There is clearly more to learn in future books but I have faith that the fuller picture will be painted at a nice pace.

The only thing I would have liked is for the romance to have been developed more slowly. I found it difficult to appreciate the depth of Pagan's feelings for Dank until the very end. We don't really see enough interaction between them, in my opinion, to justify the intensity of the relationship.

I also struggled with the YA/high school genre, probably because I just read some NA, so I found it a little bit lacking in passion. I don't mean erotica or anything, just that there isn't much emphasis on physical attraction which may make it realistic for the genre but not easy to relate to for someone my age. But then I knew it was YA when I chose to read it so this hasn't affected my rating as that wouldn't have been fair.

To sum up - A nice, quick and easy YA paranormal romance which seems to have the potential for more. ...more

Well to start I am by no means a paranormal fan, well wasn't untilTwilight and now with Existence!! I am drawn to Pagan even though I want to smack her for keeping up something should should be dropping! She is a confused girl moving through her senior year with a lot of 'odd' things on her plate. As times progresses she begins to gain a knowledge her questions, but is thrown for an absolute shocker that threw me off my chair! Can't wait for book 2; need more Dank and Gee! ...more
