I'm not sure what prompted me to give this four stars. I think it was that Annah really depressed me more than Mary and then Gabry. I loved her story, but I feel like the ending came up abruptly and then it was over. There was something about this one... In The Dead Tossed Waves, I got so attached to Gabry and Elias that at first I could have cared less about Annah's story. She pissed me off because she was always feeling so bad for herself. In The Dead Tossed Waves, I got so attached to Gabry and Elias that at first I could have cared less about Annah's story. She pissed me off because she was always feeling so bad for herself. I understood why obviously, when you're thrown into this crazy post-apocalyptic society where zombies nearly roam free and the only person you've ever loved leaves you, how are you supposed to be. In that was I really loved her growth. There were some times where she could have given up, but then she remembered all the people that loved her and that there was a good enough reason now to live. If she had never found her sister Gabry, Elias, and especially Catcher, I don't think she would have survived.

I want this series to keep going, but I'm not in love with it. I almost have to force myself to read these books, though only because I HATE zombies. They are the paranormal thing that I'm most afraid of, mostly because I feel like it's the most possible. You'd be surprised how many people I know that are legitimately prepared for a zombie attack. It's so hard putting myself into the character's shoes, and to be honest I skipped over some of the writing. Don't get me wrong, I love Carrie Ryan's writing. I actually met her at the RT Convention in LA and she's really sweet. But me and zombies don't mix. If they weren't so good, I would have stopped at The Forest of Hands and Teeth (which admittedly was the worst of the three). But the way she wrote all three from different points of view, it was hard to really feel connected to any of them. By the time I really felt how the character was feeling, the book would end and the next book would be in a different POV.

I hate to say that I'm glad this series is over (and of course there's never going to be any closure once a zombie apocalypse begins), but it was just hard for me. I don't want to have to make myself continue. And it's not like these books weren't suspenseful and romantic as much as it could be; I'm just glad I don't have to force myself to live in a world where zombies exist.
