I think Katherine Arden is a brilliant author, and I love how in her author bio it says that she just casually wrote this series while working on a farm in Hawaii. It is seriously so well written and so well plotted.
Even though I read the first book in this series months ago, I picked up right where I left off with no problem.
I loved that there was a villain switch in this novel and the demonizing of Christianity was less prominent in this book. I think Sasha was the only good hearted Christia ...more

A strong follow up to the first of the series. Vasya continues to be a total hero, though (as you can probably guess in a historically accurate Russia) it doesn't get her very far once people realise she's a woman.
The family relationships continue to be amazing in this book too, as well as all the character motivations. The magic is just as rich and we get to see a Russia struggling between it's old gods and the new Christian god, as well as trying to establish it's strength against it's war-lik ...more
