I enjoyed this book, but I don't believe I completely understand it. I think there is a lot of layers going on in this book. One thing that I did learn is that there is actually a RAT KING. It is a term when seven rats get their tails all tangled together. I want to study this a little bit more. When does this happen? Is it a cycle of food and shortage? The nutcracker is grotesque, and so the girls attachment to the doll are not clear. I have not read a lot of books by the author and maybe this

As far as creepiness goes, the Mouse King is probably a reference to a Rat King, which is actually real-ish. It's referenced, for example, in The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett. Another German character, Der Struwwelpeter, is awfully creepy, too. So, maybe it's a German thing.
Now at least in the edition I'm reading, Godfather D. hasn't said much before the first big battle. Also, in the pict ...more

This was a book I’d never read in it’s classic form. Sure, I knew the story from the different adaptations over the years but I don’t think I ever took the time to really listen to the actual story (granted translated to English so not the original German in its absolute true form). I’m glad I ended the year with this story.

I’ve never really liked The Nutcracker but I wanted to read the book. It was fine. Not my thing. Far less nightmare-inducing than the ballet, though. lol
I adored this book. The nutcracker is a fun bright tale and my niece really loved the pictures!
