Goodness, this was outstanding! Gorgeously written and magically told, this journey into the winter woods couldn’t have been better. The author expertly wove together history, myth, nature and feminism into a brilliant map of medieval Russian folklore. The woods are dangerous in winter but I swear you’ll never want to leave them. Just leave some bread for the domovoi before you journey out into the night.

So this is one of the most confusing ratings for me to give, so I'll leave it unrated. Technically, I give it 4 stars for writing style (that was an amazing writing style), and 2 stars for plot development. The plot, I felt, needed so much more work. Not because it was slow-paced (I'm actually more fond of books that are slow-paced), but because the plot didn't really begin till about 2/3 of the way.
