Goodness, this was outstanding! Gorgeously written and magically told, this journey into the winter woods couldn’t have been better. The author expertly wove together history, myth, nature and feminism into a brilliant map of medieval Russian folklore. The woods are dangerous in winter but I swear you’ll never want to leave them. Just leave some bread for the domovoi before you journey out into the night.

Shelves: young-adult, fairy-tale, fantasy, favorite-writing-style

So this is one of the most confusing ratings for me to give, so I'll leave it unrated. Technically, I give it 4 stars for writing style (that was an amazing writing style), and 2 stars for plot development. The plot, I felt, needed so much more work. Not because it was slow-paced (I'm actually more fond of books that are slow-paced), but because the plot didn't really begin till about 2/3 of the way. The writing style makes up for it, but even then the plot needed more work. However, I look forw ...more
