This book wasn't what I expected, to say the least.
First off, I'd heard this book was awful. My friends (both on goodreads, and in real) have often used the phrase, "I hope so-and-so doesn't pull a Mockingjay." So yeah, I was a bit worried to read this book and taint the love I had for the first two. This book was such a sad ending to the series 4.5 Stars

This book wasn't what I expected, to say the least.
First off, I'd heard this book was awful. My friends (both on goodreads, and in real) have often used the phrase, "I hope so-and-so doesn't pull a Mockingjay." So yeah, I was a bit worried to read this book and taint the love I had for the first two. This book was such a sad ending to the series... I can't say I cried, but my heart broke quite a few times. (view spoiler) It felt like all of the characters I'd grown to love were just killed off, especially in part 3. Good lord.

This story, a conclusion to the Hunger games trilogy, literally blew my mind. It wasn't that my mind exploded out of the sheer awesomness of it all, more like I can't even function now that I know it's over, and most of my favorite characters died. This book is really a progression of Katniss struggling to remain her real self at the beginning, to turning mentally insane by the end. Sanity slowly leaves her by the end of the novel (well, not the epilogue).

I was really frustrated with Peeta during this book. I desperately wanted him and Katniss to just hit it off right when they reunited, so it was hard for me to see him in his state.

I've seen many reviews saying that they hated the book because Katniss was whiny. For God's sake! Imagine being in her position (yes, I know it's tough, but that is part of a reader's job). Imagine being thrown into games that you know you won't make it out of, where you are forced to see children your age and younger slaughtered. Imagine having to be the one to have killed them! Imagine thinking you were safe before being thrown right back in again to repeat your same nightmares. Imagine not knowing what is happening to one of your best friends, and your lover - that s/he could be being tortured, beaten, or even killed at that very moment. Imagine having almost every single person close to you killed. Can you imagine? Then don't complain that she was 'whiny'.

Ms. Collins did a nice job of wrapping up the series. I'm not happy with the routes she took to do so, but it made for an overall very good book, and very good conclusion. ...more
