In her Newbery Medal acceptance speech, Lois Lowry gives examples of students’ ideas to the ending of The Giver, and she explains that the “true ending depends on an individual’s beliefs and hopes.” My interpretation of the story is optimistic and hopeful. I think that Jonas and Gabriel are returning home. He hasn’t heard music before, but he senses that the people in the house are expecting him.
