so, i bought this book and it has been on my to-read list for a while because i figured it would be a great read for October since i had heard it is a spooky story. yes, it definitely is! it is an intriguing and fast-paced psychological thriller but also could be classified as horror since it has some downright creepy stuff as well as some supernatural elements. it grabbed my attention right away and i wanted to continue reading it to see how the story would turn out.

the main character, Mallory so, i bought this book and it has been on my to-read list for a while because i figured it would be a great read for October since i had heard it is a spooky story. yes, it definitely is! it is an intriguing and fast-paced psychological thriller but also could be classified as horror since it has some downright creepy stuff as well as some supernatural elements. it grabbed my attention right away and i wanted to continue reading it to see how the story would turn out.

the main character, Mallory, is a young lady trying to put her life back together after a few unfortunate things happened and influenced her to become addicted to drugs. now sober, she becomes a nanny to what seems like a perfectly nice family. she gets along well with the whole family, she met a cute guy whom she starts dating, and everything seems to be going great. but then, all of the sudden creepy drawings appear, imaginary friends and ghosts visit, and lots of other weird things happen, all of which make you have to start questioning if these things are really happening or if she is maybe not such a reliable narrator?

then as we get to a major reveal (view spoiler)

regardless, i liked how the characters had to piece together all of the creepy drawings to figure out what happened in the past in order to make things right. i enjoyed studying all of them because they definitely added a lot to the storytelling and it wouldnt have the same effect visually if only listening to an audiobook. while this book received A LOT of hype, i always try not to let that influence my own thoughts, nor do i set my expectations too high because that often results in disappointment. aside from a couple minor things that may not be realistic, and of course i remind myself this is a work of fiction, overall, this book was a quick, easy read and i did enjoy it enough to want to read other works by this author in the future. ...more
