so this was my first read by this author and a book club pick. i actually read a hardcover physical book, something i haven't done in a quite a while (i have gotten rather used to e-books), because one of my friends gave me a hardcopy so i didn't buy the e-book this time. the writing was very small so it may have made it more difficult for me to get as into the book as i might have had it been digital but it also may because parts of it were interesting while parts were extremely depressing or s so this was my first read by this author and a book club pick. i actually read a hardcover physical book, something i haven't done in a quite a while (i have gotten rather used to e-books), because one of my friends gave me a hardcopy so i didn't buy the e-book this time. the writing was very small so it may have made it more difficult for me to get as into the book as i might have had it been digital but it also may because parts of it were interesting while parts were extremely depressing or seemed to drag on a bit. it certainly had a lot going on though and there are a lot of characters each with their own issues to add to the drama.

Phoebe is depressed after her husband Matt leaves her and her cat passes away, and struggling to move on with her life and decides to visit a fancy hotel that was her dream vacation to end things. Lila is a bridezilla who is spending a fortune to have her dream wedding at the same hotel and is quite surprised to run into her in the elevator since everyone staying there was supposed to be there for her wedding and even more surprised when Phoebe reveals she is suicidal and what her plans are which threaten to ruin Lila's perfect wedding. for whatever reason, these two bond even though they are so different types of people and start to confide in each other. Phoebe also meets Gary, who is actually Lila's soon-to-be husband, and they are immediately drawn to each other despite this. i cant say much else without getting spoilery so... (view spoiler)

so this was described as a light-hearted feel-good drama story about a wedding. i felt like it had a lot more going on than that being that it has what some people would consider to be strong trigger warnings such as suicidal thoughts, depression, grief for several characters over deaths of others, infidelity, IVF attempts and failures so although there were a lot of happy moments, i wouldnt exactly call it that. i also kind of would have liked a little more to the ending, like where some of the characters end up as they move forward rather than the book just ending as they leave the wedding venue hotel. i felt a lack of closure on that part so unless there is going to be a sequel, things seem a little unfinished and hanging aside from own interpretation and hope that things will be happier going forward. overall it was a decent read, just seems a little hyped up to me. ...more

A real page turner! I enjoyed the messiness of all of the relationships along with exploration of some very hard hitting topics. It is often uncomfortable but still enjoyable and definitely one I will remember.
