This book is historical fiction and my first read by this author. It was chosen as a book club pick. It focused on the strong bond of friendship and this story is mostly about two women, Ellie and Homa, who came from very different backgrounds but still managed to become best friends and although they did have plenty of ups and downs and even went through some times without speaking, they still retained a strong bond throughout the years the book spans. They met as young girls at school in Iran This book is historical fiction and my first read by this author. It was chosen as a book club pick. It focused on the strong bond of friendship and this story is mostly about two women, Ellie and Homa, who came from very different backgrounds but still managed to become best friends and although they did have plenty of ups and downs and even went through some times without speaking, they still retained a strong bond throughout the years the book spans. They met as young girls at school in Iran and were inseparable for several years. Though Homa's family didn't have much, they clearly were not lacking in love and were very close. Ellie envied this immensely since she didn't grow up with the same type of family life and loved to spend time at their house. After a few years, Ellie's mom remarried and they moved back to the privileged life she had before her father passed away and though they vowed to stay friends, they lost touch for a while until a few years later when Homa started to attend the fancy school Ellie went to. At first Ellie didn't think Homa would fit in, and be able to adapt, but she did. Years later, Ellie and her husband moved to the U.S. which allowed them to be in a safer environment since there was still so much turmoil in Iran. Homa became an activist and continued to fight for equality and women's rights and even ended up in jail for refusing to betray her loved ones. Eventually there were more revelations and forgiveness for several things and once again it just showed how strong their friendship bond was. As the book continued on we got a large look at their lifelong friendship and saw how their lives turned out . Considering that the book centered around social classes and their prejudices, political activism, feminism and equal rights, sacrifices, and other similar topics, I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, but I enjoyed seeing their lives progress, learning about Iranian culture and history, and I loved how the strong friendship bond between these two women never wavered
