Towards the end of the 90s, I was making small talk with a co-worker and the topic turned to how we had spent the previous weekend. My friend indicated that he had gone to see a movie that his wife had wanted to see, but that he had been so little engaged with the show that he had already forgotten the title. Knowing the type of movie my own wife had preferred in the recent past, I tried to jog his memory by suggesting that it had probably starred either Tom Hanks or Julia Roberts. He started chuckling and said he thought it might have had Hanks in it.

That my friend was unsure whether the movie he had seen a few days prior had starred arguably the most recognizable actor on the planet indicates that he is not much of a movie buff. I am not an expert, but I did realize that the decade of the 90s that I experienced was filled with romantic comedies from City Slickers to Sleepless in Seattle to Shakespeare in Love. Not so much for Chuck Klosterman. In this book he discusses a number of movies that were changing the direction of cinema, if not the entirety of American culture. Some of these films I had never heard of; others I recognized the names because I had heard of them on I Love the 90s on VH1, 18 years ago. It became clear to me that I experienced the 90s much differently than the author.

This was also true when it came to popular music. I had heard of the suicide of Kurt Cobain and the murder of Tupac Shakur, but I expect my response to hearing of those events was something like, "Who?". Mr. Klosterman perceives significance in each of these occurrences and others with which I was only vaguely familiar, having spent the decade singing along to Boyz2Men, Faith Hill and the Gin Blossoms. And don't get me started on I Will Always Love You.

However, I enjoy Klosterman's style of writing and was intrigued by his treatment of events and trends that I lived through. It was like seeing a familiar view from a different angle and I am sure that I benefitted from his perspective. ...more
