this is my first read by this author, but when i first starting reading it seemed a little too familiar and i said oh, yet ANOTHER book about an unreliable female narrator main character. it kind of reminded me of the girl on the train and the woman in cabin 10 and i was trying not to make comparisons immediately and just read this story.

the main character was once a successful psychologist with a family but when we meet her she is alone, housebound and suffering from agoraphobia, drinking alco this is my first read by this author, but when i first starting reading it seemed a little too familiar and i said oh, yet ANOTHER book about an unreliable female narrator main character. it kind of reminded me of the girl on the train and the woman in cabin 10 and i was trying not to make comparisons immediately and just read this story.

the main character was once a successful psychologist with a family but when we meet her she is alone, housebound and suffering from agoraphobia, drinking alcohol while taking prescription medications, watching old movies, bonding with people online, and spending a little too much time spying on her neighbors with her telescopic zoom lens camera. i seriously wondered how she didnt get into trouble for invasion of privacy with her camera constantly aimed at her neighbors houses, especially since several times she had been caught zooming in on them. of course had she not been spying with the camera, she probably never would have gotten so involved in her neighbors' daily routines and witnessed one of the major scenes of this book. after she does, she became so paranoid and obsessively insisting on what she saw, that no one really even believed her and it was obvious everyone was starting to doubt her sanity and stability since they dismissed her most of the time. her paranoia was so extreme it almost made you wonder if some of the things happening actually were or if she was just imagining most of it since she was constantly drunk and medicated and one of the side effects was hallucinating. so did she actually witness what she thought she did or imagine the whole thing?

i did call one major point quite early on because i noticed that (view spoiler)

and for someone who was so paranoid, she was also majorly trusting and careless with giving out too much personal information to her online companions. unless you actually know the person, you never know who you are really talking to and if they are who they say they are. this actually linked to something that did surprise me (view spoiler)

overall this was a quick read that definitely kept me interested the whole time. i was pleased to not immediately guess what was happening before it did for every twist and detail, see some closure as things wrapped up that did actually make sense, have it be proven that narrator wasnt as crazy as everyone thought she was, and also find that it didnt turn out to be as much like the other books i had previously read that seemed to have similar storylines. ...more

I guess I'm in the minority here, I found this book as a whole disappointing, I will say this is relating to the first 2/3 of the book. I found the main character Anna Fox hard to like, it was so monotonous reading over and over how many bottles of wine she had consumed each day, how many pills she took along with it, I guess I'm just sick of the main female character in these types of books being a weak alcoholic, mentally fragile and lacking totally in self assurance (Girl on a Train).
