While Leave of Absence is fiction, it's extremely realistic and addresses some issues of mental illness, stigma, and the power of human connection. It even was recently selected as a finalist in the "faction" -- fiction based on fact -- category of the National Indie Excellence Awards. I wrote it to increase understanding of the realities of mental illness in order to help shatter negative stereotypes. With understanding comes empathy.
