Hell's Heroes (Demonata, #10) in Darren Shan Fans

I should have read this series again before reading this book, or at least read all the books beyond the Demon Apocalypse. I'm reserving judgment until I am re-freshened of the later parts of the series.

The was Darren Shan writes, everything is so stitched together you have to read the books one after the other, otherwise you may forget an important detail, and I think that is what happened in my case. Like Cirque Du Freak, I wasn't expecting it to end the way it did. Like Cirque Du Freak, I wasn't expecting it to end the way it did. Well it kind of did go the one of two ways I was thinking it would, but he went well beyond what I thought was going to be the end. In other words, he put a twist on an expected outcome (there were really given only 2 possibilities), and offered up what ended up being an optional third that (oh how do I say it without giving it away?) was never mentioned before as a possibility. (Annoyed short groan) I wish I could say how it did end, but to say even the hint that I want to give would basically spoil the ending. I guess I have to settle with this: it is an heroic ending, but not the heroic ending that is expected in one of the two outcomes.

It is that ending that I want to say that a fast paced, well written story, with endings leaving you gripping your seat and wanting more, it is that ending of this story that makes me want to say, "I think it fell a little flat," and he may have been able to put a little extra in it to make it shine like all his other works. His other works truly gleam they are so well done, this one... I will reserve final judgment until I reread the series, but preliminary judgement, this one... it has polish, but doesn't seem to shine nearly as brightly as his other works for kids and teens (I haven't read his books for adults). All the other books in this series (especially from Demon Apocalypse and on) give the gigantic build up, and knowing him and how he writes, you shouldn't be disappointed. Part of the ending is huge, that is true, but I feel that this book didn't really feel like it met up with the climatic expectations I was going to have because for 3-4 books or more it was nothing more than tension building. I still say Cirque Du Freak is the best series I have read for children, but the Shadow Children series isn't that far behind either. ...more

There are average novels, novels you find on accident, novels your friend may have given to you, and so forth. BUT The Demonata's final chapter, Hell's Heroes, is none of the above. If you stayed with Grubbs, Kernel, and Bec from the beginning like I have, then the parting hurts greatly. I was super excited to read the final book in this series (and even more psyched that I found the UK edition!) so I read all the reviews multiple times. They are raved about how great the ending was, so of course I was curious. And I must say, I was impressed. It was definately a shocking twist and very original. I love this series and author so much and I will definately be reading all his other books ASAP!
