I have read my first Octavia Butler. High freaking time. I liked it a lot but did not love it. I kept on thinking: is that really how you would react if you time travelled back without wanting to the enslaved South? But I sure shall pick something else by her.
This is one of those books that’s more important than enjoyable. One of these stars is simply for Butler shaking shit up in the 70s. This is my third Butler and yet again, the protagonist is cool as a cucumber. They all have anger flare-ups, but at predictable, line-crossing moments. This quality is refreshing in a way, but also makes the text a little flat. In a similar vein, I found the 1976 dialogue unrealistically put-together, circumspect, mature. Kindred is a masterpiece and a must read for science fiction fans.
