I found this book fascinating as historical fiction. The frame story is sort of science-fictiony: in the not-too-distant future, Oxford sends historians back in time to learn about history. An historian is sent riskily back to the 1300s in England. From then on, the book is a novel about life in medieval Britain, more or less. Kivrin travels back in time to Oxford in 1320; meanwhile, the historians she's left behind battle an unknown virus.
It turns out Kivrin has actually gone to 1348, the year the plague began to take over England, and she's smack in the middle of the epidemic.
What I like about Willis' writing is that she includes a lot of detail about the daily lives of the contemporaries, the mundane tasks that people do automatically. It humanizes history.
