3.5 stars. I enjoyed this more than I thought. A thriller (more mystery) set in 1830ies India. I loved the critical view of colonialism, the East India company and more. It is a light read, nothing too taxing, yet I feel that within it's genre this is a pearl. It was a perfect easy, pleasant read after some hard hitting novels.

I'm afraid that I didn't love this as I hoped to. The pros? The world-building was absolutely brilliant - I felt safely in the hands of someone who understood India and the culture of the East India company in the 1830s, and who knew the geography of the setting. I also very much enjoyed the introduction to Jeremiah Blake, the Company's Special Inquiry Agent, and young, naive Lieutenant William Avery. I found this book really interesting especially since so many of the characters are historic characters. It is a little bit slow and I couldn't follow any clues but the atmosphere and the setting were so real and descriptive and Rich that India itself almost became a character. Recommended for mystery lovers.
