Another book that I've had on my to-read list for years! So glad I finally managed to read it (well listen).

Hero is about Thom, whose father was a disgraced superhero and whose mother had disappeared. He develops healing powers, saves some people and gets called for an audition at the League (really similar to Justice League - even the characters, so it was easy to imagine them). The other one was that he was gay.

Thom gets placed in a team of try-out heroes: Larry, Scarlett and Ruth and they are led by Kevin, the Golden Boy. At the same time, I'm not sure how he managed but Thom had school, basketball, a part-time job and a volunteer position at the community center. He goes to the League for practice and he practices basketball and exercises with Goran, who is part of more than one of the other parts of his life.

At times, it was so awkward that you felt for Thom. Other times Thom was being so obtuse and sometimes he was an ass! I really loved Ruth and really felt when something happened to her. I loved Scarlett too, she was a bit too aggressive at times, but it's normal seeing as what she is fighting. She had good development. I love the team as a whole. Larry is supportive though you have to pity him and Kevin can be an ass but a helpful one.

The ending I felt was a bit too rushed like the last chapter could have been two. After such a disaster, clean up is needed and I wonder why no book or movie every writes about it. Maybe they think it won't be interesting? Maybe they think it's too hard to do because how do you clean up such a big mess? It must be really slow.

This book really felt like a superhero comic, with some good character development for many characters. The plot was similar to comics. I listened to this as an audiobook and it's a bit different than other audiobooks. First of all, Stan Lee did the introduction for it. Then Michael Urie (who I love from Ugly Betty) narrated it with great voices - although the women were a bit husky. There was music composed just for the book! 3.0 of 5 stars – Fun, Light Gay YA Superhero Story

I read this a number of years ago, when it first came out, and I’ve now revisited it because it’s an LGBT Fantasy Fiction Group book for the month of August.

While I initially gave it 4 stars, I honestly have to give it 3 now. I still enjoyed it, and I love gay fantasies, superheroes and YA. So for those of you in the same boat, don't shy away from this. It will still be a fun read.
