But I had not known that I was strong enough to do any of those things until they were over and I had done them. I had to do the work first, not knowing.
It would be unfair for me to rate this less than five stars. Right from the beginning I was enthralled. I was under this book’s spell until the end.
The characters were complex and human. The world was rich with atmosphere (it’s ideal for reading in winter) and culture (centered around Slavic regions). It never felt slow. In fact, I felt so much ...more

What a wonderful, enchanting read. The atmosphere of this book was fantastic. Cold, but somehow cozy inspite of that.
I loved the storytelling in this book. I was captivated and engrossed throughout the whole story. Not a single page was boring. I kept feeling like I was in a magical fairytale and honestly I would love to spend a day in this world. 3.5 The world was much richer and more polished this time. It felt real. And while the story was excellent it wasn't quiet as good as the first one. Still look forward to any more she has come out.

Compared to Uprooted, it took me a lot longer to get invested in these characters. Wanda largely took my heart, while I respected Miryem’s intelligence and ingenuity. The last 150 pages had me gripped, while the first 250 were almost a drudgery to read (albeit, important for the framework and overall impact of the tale).
