In many ways Smith writes in response to Robert E Howard, whose primitivism-worship drips from the page and whose simplicity of outlook has been warped by the pastiche writers that followed. Oron's adventures course-correct. These 'barbarians' are not savages: they have sophisticated philosophic thinking and deep consideration of the role of leadership and destiny.

I really enjoyed Smith's Oron series. Some of the best sword and sorcery out there, next to Howard, Gemmell, and Wagner.
