I would have given this 4 stars, but the philosophy spewed by the Hawk throughout the whole book was a little much. Most of the book was 4 star Sword and Sorcery material. I was a little disappointed, as the previous 2 in the series were excellent.

In many ways Smith writes in response to Robert E Howard, whose primitivism-worship drips from the page and whose simplicity of outlook has been warped by the pastiche writers that followed. Oron's adventures course-correct. These 'barbarians' are not savages: they have sophisticated philosophic thinking and deep consideration of the role of leadership and destiny.
