A fun swashbuckling romp through an alt-history France infused with the author's obvious love for the history of Paris. The magic in Pevel's setting is, for the most part, so subtle that the novel could have been written by Dumas or Sabatini.

The only strike against the book is that Pevel features such a large cast of characters that it often isn't clear who is being featured in each chapter. This may be due in part to his spare style that results in part of the cast being underwritten, but mostl
