This is the best book Salyards has written to date. No joke. In the interest of transparency, I have to confess I have a mad man-crush on the guy. In fact, some might accuse me of stalking him. Which is stupid to admit, I know--if someone ever took Salyards out, I'm sure I'd be a serious person of interest.

Anyway, the book is pretty good. Give it a look.

An unusual novel about a naive scribe and a band of fearsome soldiers led by a brutal and secretive Captain. Like Arki, I found myself drawn into this mysterious story and I was compelled to keep reading to discover the reason for their mission. I look forward to reading more about these characters and the world they inhabit.

Told by Arkamondos, a young and not-very-worldly scribe hired by Captain Braylar Killcoin, an older and not-very-nice officer leading an equally not-very-nice group of soldiers sent to -- well, that would be telling.

A compelling and surprisingly intimate story. The scribe-with-a-band-of-soldiers thing is reminiscent of Glen Cook's Black Company, obviously, but Salyards uses it to very different effect -- the focus is much tighter and the scale is much smaller. (Also, there's almost no magic to s

A group of mercenaries on a secret mission in hostile territory are required by their emperor to take with them an archivist who will record all their deeds. Sounds like an extract from a Black Company story by Glen Cook, and indeed it could be. Arki is not the first archivist to join the company and the other came to bad ends.
