There are hundreds of good fantasy books, several that can be considered classics. Only a few can be compared in any fashion to the The Lord of the Rings. For me, this is one of them.
It may not be as grand or as ambitious as LOTR, but The Broken Sword is recognized, by several in the know, as an unheralded classic by Poul Anderson, a major fantasy & science-fiction master, and this book, a personal favorite of mine.
The Broken Sword was first published in 1954, the same year as The Fellowship of ...more

I appreciate the book's impact, on all things fantasy and sword & sorcery I love. From Moorcock's Elric, with his cursed blade and dark fate, to Gary Gygax' D&D and his treatment of the elves.
The writing is intoxicating, yet it kept me at distance, the same way that Tolkien's work (LotR trilogy in particular) did. Emulating a Norse saga, Anderson leaps from epic moments to intimate ones, often between few words or paragraphs. Those -epic- leaps made me loose my footing in this (otherwise excell ...more

Leea----ohhhh my. Quite a different depiction of elves than Tolkien's. No celibate tree-hugging ladies here.
And yet, beings that are immortal, beautiful and bored are likely to be also a little 'wicked', seeking sensations that lift the drudgery of their rarefied existence. The elves are not perfect, exuding kindness and righteousness. No, they commit the same crimes as their enemies and are as eager to spill blood as their foe. I did enjoy it, though.

Written in 1954, and thus being one of Poul Anderson's earliest books, I have had this on my TBR pile for decades (I'd seen the title in the back of my copy of the Dungeon Masters Guide from the early 80s). It's my third Anderson book, having read Three Lions, and Tau Zero.
It's a pretty brutal tale, more than I anticipated, set in a mixture of Norse and Celtic mythology. It has the feeling of a classic saga, with layers of tragedy, twists, sorrow, and angst. The violence is harsh, and very matte ...more

Although I enjoyed this story, and it is highly rated along with being on Gary Gygax's recommended reading from the First Edition Dungeon Master Guide it did not capture my full attention. Overall, an excellent sword and sorcery story that borrows much from North Mythology. Published at the same time as LOTR this story is not the epic of LOTR but more action-packed sword and sorcery.
