Excellent from start to finish!
This has been on my tbr list since I was about 10-years-old and saw it listed in the back of the Basic D&D rules as a recommended read, along with other fantasy classics. Took me long enough to read it, but man am I glad I did!
The Broken Sword is mythically epic in that it incorporates the Nordic pantheon, faerie creatures of the British Isles and mortal man's interaction with them. There's a jungle fever love affair that turns out to be semi-incestuous ("Step bro ...more

A classic of the first water, full of magic and revenge and inappropriate relations, told in masterfully-crafted prose. When AElfrida, wife of Orm the Strong gives birth to a son, a witch rushes off to tell Imric the Elf-King who, that being his nature, immediately goes off to father a son on a captive Troll princess, which son he can then leave as a changeling when he takes Orm's true-born son.
The boys, Valgard (the changeling left in human lands) and Scafloc (the true-born son, fostered by the ...more

Skafloc bears a heavy doom, and when you read the word "doom" it should be in a leaden voice, not loud but in a way that other sounds disappear around it. And I am taken by how much this shares with The Children of Húrin, not just in terms of its Skywalker-children-ickyness but also the sense of manipulation of the lives of the children of Orm and the sense that the world of faerie is fading, in this case by the introduction of the jealous and uncompromising White Christ who rewrites the rules

The Broken Sword is a dark and brooding novel of Norse mythology. It has elves , trolls , leprechauns and Norse gods but different from anything you've read before. Well worth your time if you read about or have seen anything about vikings.

very strong and entertaining book, but only read the original, not the weaker (by the author's own admission!) updated version. great use of original myths with authentic elves and vikings.

Although I enjoyed this story, and it is highly rated along with being on Gary Gygax's recommended reading from the First Edition Dungeon Master Guide it did not capture my full attention. Overall, an excellent sword and sorcery story that borrows much from North Mythology. Published at the same time as LOTR this story is not the epic of LOTR but more action-packed sword and sorcery.
