No rating, as this is my "own book" but I did want to say a bit about it.
This is a standalone prequel to my Riyria Revelations Series. It is being relesed for free and you can get a copy by clicking here
No previous knowledge of the Riyria Revelations is necessary. It is a short story (just 5,400 words) so is a quick introduction to a larger epic tale.

No spoilers.
This was written as a short story by Michael Sullivan and takes place before The Riyria Revelations and one year after The Crown Tower. Here both Royce and Hadrian meet a poor viscount on the road and get into a bit of trouble. It was nice to read the dialogue of our protagonists as they learn more of each other as time moves forward.

The story (when you finally get to it past the introduction), is… cute.
It’s a nice little “day-in-the-life” of two men—three, if you count their rescue project—that gives a lighthearted look at their relationship. There’s more talking/explaining than showing, and I found the tale a bit short on both plot and tension. I found the ending too coincidental and convenient to be particularly satisfying, but I did enjoy the banter, the humor, and the unusual character of the viscount. The contrast betw ...more

I wasn't familiar with this author or his Riyria Chronicles series, but this short story has motivated me to investigate further. The title story itself is a bit sleight and ends abruptly, but the characters (well-meaning soldier Hadrian and his cynical thief comrade Royce) and their interactions were appealing. Fans of Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser stories may notice a similar vibe.

Great little short story about Royce and Hadrian! I'm very thankful to the author for sending a free copy just for asking. Thanks Michael!
