Pretty awesome on the re-read. It's been about 14 years since I began my first Malazan adventure and I can honestly say there are so many memorable scenes from this first installment that immediately transported me to a fantasy world that I could only have dreamed the genre could be so detailed and well written. in short this was the first 'Good' fantasy story I ever read. I was on a short stint home and staying with the parents and I started to peruse my Dad's book shelf which is domin ...more

A great read. Alot is happening in this book but Steven Erikson keeps it uncluttered and brings everything together perfectly at the end. Not at all hard to follow as the griefers may say but use the glossary often. Don't let the Dramatis Personae at the beginning discourage you either. Most of the characters listed barely have a role and are mentioned only once or twice. Highly recommended read.

Ok, what did I just read?
They warned me that the author doesn't do ANY hand-holding and they were right.
