Red Country, by Joe Abercrombie
is likely my favorite fantasy fiction read to come out of the Big publishers this year (Orbit) I still mean to read a few more from TOR and PYR, but this will be pretty tough to beat.
Anyone else I really liked (published this year) is almost certainly indie.

This western-style tale follows Shy South and her craven stepfather as they travel to a mining town to retrieve their kidnapped family members and seek justice. Along the way, we find that both Shy and her stepfather each have dark and bloody secrets from their pasts. Much like with Stephen King's Dark Tower series, I loved the whole Wild West take on fantasy.

Where previous books in the First Law series had more of a pseudo-European feel, this is a straight up Western. Sure, it's fantasy, so it's swords instead of guns, but there's little to no magic.
There are links to the other books of the series, some more obvious than others.
Shy, the main character kicks ass. The book is as dark and gritty as his other works, but there is enough humor added to keep it from becoming too cynical.
